Design gone full circle?
From pixel-pushing to systems, and back again through AI: why the craft conversation is resetting, and what actually matters now.
Main point: Design is coming full circle. Exploring and building are colliding again because building got cheap, and that's good for craft.
Design used to mean screens, then systems and alignment. Now it also means things that run. Like learning HTML to ship a page years ago, designers are learning conventions again so their intent survives in a real codebase.
What the circle means
We're not going backwards. When building was expensive, exploring happened in tools that couldn't break production, which left a translation gap. Now building is cheaper, exploring wants to happen where the constraints are real. Otherwise you're still guessing, just faster.
Why it's good for craft
Craft includes knowing what breaks when data is ugly and permissions are uneven. Those lessons can now arrive before handoff instead of after. Designers aren't asked to become engineers, just to own fidelity earlier.
What I'm optimising for
Clarity, speed and kindness to future-you: environments where the default path respects tokens, components and structure, and AI helps you navigate the system rather than invent a new one. Design isn't losing its soul to code. It's finally allowed to touch the parts that decide whether the soul survives shipping.
